As an introduction to this analysis
Choosing a new laptop means that you will have to decide between several models.Price and type of technology alone do not justify the choice of a model. So we ran tests on Acer Extensa 15 to find out what it was worth.
This article is therefore composed according to functions; What is the purpose of this model?
Extensa 15 enough for internet use?
If your need for a laptop comes down to surfing the web, whether on e-commerce or information sites, and to making a few tables in excel, you could be satisfied with this Extensa 15. An inexpensive computer such as Extensa 15 may seem to be the solution. Acer is a manufacturer that has been offering laptops for several years now, but for this laptop they have used lower quality components. In the end, it is a product that will make you think about changing it in less than 4 years.
It’s almost the perfect tool for travelling. A screen 15.6 inches that makes this model transportable anywhere. Even if it is not equipped with a touch screen, this model is still easy to use. It’s not prohibitive, but you may find it Extensa 15 less easy to use when you’re on the go.
Nevertheless, it remains a quality product with an easy to use trackpad. Logically, the treatment given to this product by Acer suggests that you will be able to use it for many years to come.
The manufacturer offers a processor AMD A4-9120C; A mid-range orientation. A technical choice to reduce the final price of the laptop. A latest-generation processor would have implied a higher price. So certainly, with this laptop you have enough resources for internet surfing and word processing, but you may have to change it in less than 5 years. The lack of RAM will surely be felt with this laptop which has just 8 Gb of memory. It will be a very good idea to spend a few extra euros to upgrade your computer with an extra 2Gb or 4Gb. Your computer will work better and longer.
This is one of the smallest available disk space among the laptops of the moment. By offering only 256 Gb, this Extensa 15 is one of the smallest in its category. This shouldn’t be a major problem, but if you need to, remember to have a USB key with you.
Last point about the autonomy. the Extensa 15 can work 9 hours in wifi mode only activated by the batteries. The batteries that equip this model are less efficient than those of other models in the same category. Not as good as what you can get on competing products, and that’s a pity, because in the end the laptop is pleasant to use.
Extensa 15 for videos?
With this laptop, Acer offers a product oriented toward general use. If you are very mindful of the quality for multimedia use, we advise you to turn to models other than the Extensa 15; more high-end products, which on the other hand will be a little more expensive. Finally, a simple computer, yet not really made for audio and video.
As for the screen, it is a model of reduced size, 15.6 inches, with a 1280×1080. The colours are faithful, warm enough, and the contrasts allow a high level of detail. The major disadvantage of its small size is that in multimedia mode, watching a movie can be tiring for your eyes. The main advantage linked to this size, on the other hand, is its overall weight: 1.9 kg that it will be easy to take anywhere.
Unfortunately, no glossy screen is available on this model. This results in poorer quality in environments with intermediate to low light levels. It will be more delicate to perfectly distinguish the images without getting tired.
Therefore, when used in daylight conditions, you will appreciate the lack of this feature, as the light induces reflections, making it difficult to view.
On the sound side, it Extensa 15 has good components: board and integrated speakers. To test the audio quality, we turned up the volume with a movie trailer and then with a few songs of different types. Despite good quality, you won’t get the same sound level as with a decent set of external speakers. In short, it is relevant here to consider buying additional speakers if you are very sensitive to the quality of this function.
Obsolescence has already striken this laptop, equipped with a processor AMD A4-9120C that is several years old now. As a result, in the important calculation phase, it may be a little brighter, and will consume more energy. It’s still acceptable in audio/video mode, you only need to launch one application at a time.
On the application side, Acer chose to let you do it. The operating system and that’s it. This is a Windows 10 Professional on which you can install the software you need. Can only be VLC to manage the audio and video part.
Equipped with the AMD Radeon R3 graphic card, and with 8 Gb of RAM, you will be able to see your movies and even do photo editing if needed. Not good enough for 3D imaging professionals, but good enough for most of us.
Acer didn’t prioritize connectivity on this laptop. The Extensa 15 only 2 ports only provides you with ports. Not enough to connect everything; you’ll have to choose.
Nothing is more unpleasant than a computer that shuts down before the end of the film because of batteries of poor autonomy. That’s only 9 hours of battery life you have at your disposal. A management of the time available to take into account when you are on the move watching a movie. In other words, do not rely too much on performance and prefer to use this device always connected to electricity.
The Extensa 15 to use while travelling.
Easier to transport than a desktop computer, it is not intended for travelling. This seems to be the issue that the Acer didn’t really take into account in the design of this Extensa 15. Having tested this laptop in situations as diverse as traveling, in a suitcase between shirts and jeans, while traveling between home and work, on a family weekend, here’s what you should remember.
Forget about vacations and commuting.
Its light weight allows you to take it wherever you want. It’s one of the best in its class. It’s hard to have a large, lightweight laptop; the compromise is made according to your use. A 15.6 inches size that can be painful when you have to stay there for more than an hour.
If you prefer the touch screen mode, you will be disappointed by this Extensa 15. The constraint being then to always have the mouse in the computer bag. Another possibility is to use the trackpad on the keyboard.
Finally, the absence of a glossy slab does not compromise image quality. The screen shows an interesting result.
This laptop is very comfortable to use. The image is beautiful, and with its anti-reflective matt tile, no more problems even outdoors.
At the same time, the laptop processor AMD A4-9120C is struggling; in terms of power it does less well than its competitors, and consumes a lot of energy.
The result is a poorer autonomy. You will need to expect 2/3 of this estimate for standard use; if you push the processor, the number will drop a little more.
Battery life is worse than the competitors, with only 9 hours before the laptop has to be plugged back into the mains.
Because of its probable use for travel, this laptop was thought to be thin and light with a SSD hard drive of 1 256 Gb. This disk technology (solid-state drive), tried and tested for more than 20 years, allows to store data, on the same principle as the usb key. Thanks to this, Acer was able to almost completely eliminate the noise caused by the rotation of the platters and the movements of the read/write heads existing on conventional disks. For those who will need more space, this Extensa 15 will require the purchase of an external drive, as a permanent home for photos, music and your movie collection.
Travel will be a mere formality when you decide to take it along. Its 15.6 inches screen is so compact that it’s almost the size of a large tablet.
The manufacturer offers only a few connection options, with only 2 connectors. This makes it one of the least well equipped models currently.
Bluetooth technology is great when you’re on the go, and you’ll enjoy the convenience of connecting easily to a phone or speakers.
Because of all these elements, we do not recommend this Extensa 15 for travel use.
The Extensa 15 to make audio or video editing.
Not really designed for video editing or music. The weak point of this model is its processor, and its amount of memory. Even if it would be possible to do audio or video cutting, it doesn’t seem to correspond to this need. Acer has favoured more standard uses, which require less computing speed. You should also be aware that this model is becoming outdated. It will be more suitable for word processing and Internet browsing, and as soon as you try to run applications in parallel, you will have frozen screens and a rise in computer temperature, whose processor will quickly reach its operating limits.
The components and applications of this laptop are for basic use. You can always try to do video editing with the processor AMD A4-9120C. However, there’s no question of switching to professional applications; the processor performance and the 256 Gb disk size will calm your nerves due to their lack of power and space.
Even if this corresponds to quality components, Acer made the choice to put only one SSD. The advantage is the speed of starting and execution, but the disadvantage is the shorter lifetime of the disk. The Extensa 15 allows a price reduction with this choice, with an available space of 256 Gb. It is nevertheless one of the good laptops in terms of storage, compared to its competitors.
With 9 hours in battery-only calculation mode, you’ll have little latitude. It’s not much, and it’s best to let it plugged in while you’re editing audio or video. Maybe the next model will be better off.
Well thought out in terms of connections, it Extensa 15 receives the USB3 connection. An interesting format for transfers when you want to move your large audio-video files. In addition, this technology offers a better rate of high-speed file transfer between your laptop and external drives.
In the end, it is a product not allowing audio and video editing. However, it will be perfect for web browsing and word processing.
The Extensa 15- the right model to play with?
It is sometimes interesting, when you decide to buy a laptop, to be able to use it for several functions. With this Extensa 15, it will certainly be possible to play simple games, but as soon as the need for calculations requires more power, the image rendering will degrade. The main causes are related to a lack of homogeneity in the choice of the graphics chip, associated with the processor, the screen and the cooling level of the laptop.
This laptop has a resolution in 1280×1080, which is one of the poorest existing today. This results in lower image quality when you are in game mode.
The technological evolution being wha it is, this model does much less than many other laptops. Tests have shown the limitations of this laptop, including some image degradation and processor temperature rises. Clearly, if you want to use it to play all day long, it may be relevant to turn to a more powerful model.
Since Acer has not designed this model for gaming, the display system is not dimensioned for an exemplary reactivity during your gaming sessions. Unless you play games with designs older than 5-10 years.
On the question of hard drive size, this model is not very good.256 Gb are the minimum for computers today, making it one of the laptops with the least amount of space.
For Wi-Fi technology, Acer decided to make the use of the 5GHz wireless band possible. More speed for those living in full Wi-Fi areas.
Even if the weight is not very important when you use it for games, know that this model is one of the lightest of the market with its 1.9 Kg.
One of the lowest battery life 9 hours, which will force you to often leave this laptop plugged in.
In the end, we do not recommend this Extensa 15 for games; low performance will degrade the rendering and playability. On the other hand, it is very suitable for word processing and multimedia.
Extensa 15 the right choice for office automation ?
Not really designed for office use, Extensa 15 it’s still a good product. In detail, here’s what’s going on.
Acer has designed this new laptop for the majority of users. It’s Windows 10 Professional, last generation.
It’s not Extensa 15 equipped with all the applications you’ll need. You will have to download the applications you need, which implyies for some software a slight increase in the overall cost.
Among the choices available to you, it will be interesting to take into account the weight in order to facilitate its transport. A weight of 1.9 Kg, which makes this computer one of the best in the lightest category.
Key spacing will be important for office use. On the right-hand side you will find a number pad.
Thanks to the matt treated screen surface, there is almost no reflection of direct sunlight or lamps in the offices. The colour palette is of good quality; blacks and whites do not look like yellow and grey.
The storage of this model, 256 Gb, is one of the smallest. If you are used to backing up everything locally, you will have to think about adding an external hard drive, because the hard drive Extensa 15can be quickly filled.
In short, the Extensa 15 is an average choice. Or for occasional use, knowing that due to its technical characteristics it will be obsolete in less than 3 years.
In short, is the Extensa 15, the right choice ?
The conclusion of the test Extensa 15 is that almost all its specifications are below the others. It’s not expensive, but it’s almost too much considering its low power.
To be clear enough, we do not recommend this laptop for :
– web browsing
– listening to music and watching videos
– travel use
– make audio and video editing
– playing video games
– office tasks
